Star Tribune – Obituary For Amie Muller, Burn Pit Victim

For my readers familiar with the situation, the Star Tribune published the obituary for Amie Muller, beloved mother, wife and burn pit victim.

Amie passed away last Saturday, at 36 years old, after a devastating fight against pancreatic cancer likely linked to her tours in Iraq and burn pit exposure.

She is survived by three children, Caidyn Krause, Jace and EmmyLu, and is the beloved wife of Brian Muller.

Amie’s funeral service is today at 11 am in Woodbury, MN, at the Crossroads Church followed by a Celebration of Life event at the South St. Paul VFW. On Monday, Amie will be buried at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

I plan to follow up on this to share some words that her daughter Caidyn had to say about Amie’s life, the Iraq War and burn pits.

Generally, the media focuses on the death or injury of veterans while failing to evaluate the long-term effects of war on our children.

For that reason, next week, I plan to share some of what Caidyn told me about her own experience of loss and what she wants the public to know about her mom.

Burn Pit Background

For those unfamiliar, Amie was diagnosed last April with pancreatic cancer at 36 years old. The past 10 months of her life were spent fighting the burn pit-related disease that ultimately took her life after spreading to her liver.

My Personal Notes On Amie Muller

I rarely delve into my personal life on this site, but my daughter, Caidyn Krause, asked me to share some words about her mom here on the site, which I am happy to do but will keep it brief to avoid taking away from the Muller’s moment to share about Amie.

[For those interested, you can tune in to watch her service this morning on Facebook Live.]

Amie was loved by everyone, and as someone who grew to know her quite well over the past sixteen years, I can personally say she will be missed by thousands of people worldwide, least of all me.

Sixteen years ago, Amie and I first met in the US Air Force while stationed at RAF Mildenhall, UK, where she served in the military police. It was at that time we started on our journey as co-parents of Caidyn Krause, in 2001.

Over the years, she developed into a star airman and exceptional photojournalist. She served two tours in Iraq, 2005 and 2007.

By 2009, Amie developed numerous leading programs to help the State of Minnesota honor its fallen troops as well as designing the “Gold Star” family license plate.

That is when she met her loving husband Brian Muller and went on to have her two other children, Jace and EmmyLu.

Throughout her life, Amie never met a stranger, and always had a way of making even the most downtrodden feel welcome. She had a passion for helping people and hoped to someday become a psychologist to help others work through loss and grief.

Your passing has not gone unnoticed by the masses, Amie, and we will always cherish your memory. You are an incredible mother who always gave 110% for your children.

Thank you for my first child and only daughter, Caidyn.

I will always cherish her and our time working together as co-parents to make Caidyn into the exceptionally intelligent, strong and funny young woman she has become.

The funeral service will be broadcast on Facebook Live from Amie’s Facebook support group: Team Amie.

I read a great deal of comments on Star Tribune – Obituary For Amie Muller, Burn Pit

Could it be only me or does it look like like a few of these comments appear

  3. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s both
equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you’ve
hit the nail on the head. The issue is something not enough

  5. I am just finding this sad news. I am sorry for the families loss and sending prayers. Aime is a very brave angel.

I came across this article as my son who is 34 was just diagnosed with colon cancer. He too served in Iraq and I am finding this to become a theme of these veterans. He has VA as his only insurance and they are not allowing him a referral to a cancer center. He has been telling VA for 5 years that he was not well and that he had blood in his stool. Finally after 5 years he was able to see a new doctor in November 2016 who ordered a colonscopy. It wasn’t until February that he was approved for the colonscopy and it was scheduled for April 2017, just 2 weeks ago. Late last week we received the news that he had 2 areas of cancer in his colon.

Our Vets are giving their lives for us and our government is not protecting these men and women. These are not just protectors of our country, they are also someones son’s, daughters, mothers, fathers, sister and brothers. Why does Veterans Administration refuse to see these men and women as people and provide them with the care they need and at a speedy pace. The government sleeps well at night while I am up praying and hoping that my son comes through this.

    1. Ava, some advice that you need to take to heart.

I dont know if your son is married or not, or wants your help or not, but you need to become a mean, nasty, demanding mother as much as you can to help him.

5 years is a long time to wait, even more so where cancer is involved.

Don’t take no for an answer from the fools at the VA.

It often helps vets to have someone to help, and irate mothers are often very helpful. You might consider recording phone calls from the VA and going with him to appointments.

The delays In his care are despicable and without reason. In my opinion it is gross malpractice. Don’t accept delays in his getting timely care or treatment. I don’t care if his house is a block from the VA, if they cannot schedule treating him within a short, reasonable time, demand that he get outside care and the VA pay for it.

There is ZERO excuse for waiting this long. None.

Come back here often and we will try help as much as we can.

  6. Ben,

I am sorry for your loss. Caidyn sounds like a remarkable young woman, to show so much courage at a time like this. Bless you all.

  7. Ben, all our prayers go out for your loss, and for the sorrow you and your family are going through. Just from what I’ve read today, Amie was truly remarkable. God Bless the Veterans and their families. Ben, you are a service to us all.

  8. My prayers, thoughts and sympathy for you, your daughter and for the Muller’s grave loss.

“McMaster: ‘Radical Islamic Terrorism’ Not Helpful When Describing Threat”

The article, which could be “spun” isn’t the surprising part. What is surprising is what’s in the “COMMENTS SECTION”!
It’s starts out people slamming the news media (NewsMax), then goes into people tearing into the VA. Also, they are praising veterans!

Thought y’all might want to check it out!

  10. I am so sorry for your loss and have followed Amie since you first reported on her. She was and will remain an inspiration to those of us who care about the long-term consequences of war. Rest in Peace, Amie. You will long be remembered.

  11. Rest in Paradise, Amie. So sorry for your loss, Ben and Caidyn, and the Mullers. God Bless all of our Veterans. Stay safe wherever you are. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  13. Ben,

I was deeply saddened reading about the death of Amie. I pray the Lord gives you and yours the strength to get thru this time of grief…I look forward to reading more about this Great warrior , mother, wife who apparently was a caring loving and loved young lady…..

  14. Remember, Amie will still be here
As long as you hold her, in your memory

Remember, when your dreams have ended
    Time can be transcended
    Just remember her

Amie is the one star that keeps burning, so brightly,
It is the last light, to fade into the rising sun

    She’s with you
    Whenever you tell, her story
For she is all she’s done

Remember, Amie will still be here
As long as you hold her, in your memory
    Remember her

Amie is the one voice in the cold wind, that whispers
And if you listen, you’ll hear her call across the sky

As long as she still can reach out, and touch you
    Then she will never die

    Remember, she’ll never leave you
    If you will only
    Remember her

    Remember her…

Remember, Amie will still be here
As long as you hold her
    In your memory

Remember, when your dreams have ended
    Time can be transcended
    she’ll live forever
    Remember her

    Remember her

  15. Ben, my wife and I want to express our deepest condolences to Caidyn, Jace, Emmylu, Brian Muller, and yourself, for the physical loss of Amie. I personally know how this feels, dearly hold onto the memories of Amie. May God richly bless all of you while your going through the grieving and healing process. Ben, from how you described Amie, she was a beautiful and caring person, and shall be missed by the ones who truly loved her, and those whose lives she lovingly touched and changed.

  16. Sorry to Hear about the Loss and thanks for letting us into your personal lives. As an advocate here in NV I know she didn’t have a smooth sailing w vets and the politics surrounding helping Vets, my hat off to Her and I’m just as proud of her as most who knew her she served her fellow vet/man to the end. Expect Mooorrrreee issues lk these burn pits etc to go on since we got Mr Corporate in office pretending to be for the people and doing a good job of selling ice to the Eskimos.

  17. So sorry for everyone connected to Amie. She was too young, too beautiful, too full of life’s plans, and too much to do yet with and for her children.

God bless her and her family.

  18. So sorry for your loss Ben, it is no surprise to me that you and Amie went on to careers the speak up for the disadvantaged, unspoken and unheard people. She sounds like an amazing person and I can’t even comprehend the loss this family and the people she served…. sending my prayers, wishing all some kind of comfort during your healing process.

  19. I am very sorry for your families loss Ben.

And truly saddened and angered at what these Burn Pit veterans are having to go through.

I can just imagine the number of excuses and lied told by the VA, and the hell these vets are going through.

  20. It is so sad this has happened to this woman as she served our Nation. I had a niece who served in Iraq as a translator, where she met her husband, who served there as a Ranger. She too developed cancer after being there. It took her life back in 2014 after a few years of battling cancer, leaving her sons without their Mother. A National Guard Unit in Oregon was severely impacted by their exposures as well. The ongoing denial of the burn pits impacting humans who Volunteered to serve, is just the same as the denials of the damages of the various herbicides in Vietnam. It seems as if the ones who refused to serve and are in Congress choose to ignore the facts, and the facts are killing off Veterans, and as in Vietnam, and causing birth defects among their children. Billions were wasted in “No-Bid” Contracts to the very Corporations that operated the burn pits for Profit and were never held responsible.

      1. No, I’m in New Mexico, I had read about the Oregon National Guard Unit several years back when it was in the news.

  21. Off topic, an article just posted says a judge has denied the VA request to stay a decision forcing the VA to pay for emergency care outside the VA.

In plain english, it says the VA needs to get off their ads and pay their bills.

Seems the VA has been screwing veterans by suspending consideration of 373000 claims for payment of outside ER care because once again, the VA decided to follow their own rules, and a veteran sued.

The VA claims the vet had his claim denied because it was non emergency care. The vet had emergency open heart surgery outside the VA.

How many want to bet he went to outside care after being told the VA didn’t find any health problems with him?

    1. Hey, 91Veteran,
This morning while taking our “Katie” to the dog groomer. We were listening to our favorite radio station, 96.5 FM, WDBO, out of Atlanta, Georgia. What we heard brought lots of laughter. You’ll get a kick out of it too.
Seems there’s a push, over in France, to have ——— wait for it———
“Obama run for President IN FRANCE!”

That’s right, many of the French people want our Former (Muslim) POTUS as their leader! I wonder, what the hell are those folks drinking? It sure can’t be “Fine Wine!”

      1. @Crazy elf– I am thinking the French must be drinking vintage ‘Snowflake Whine’, which is made from the tedious collection of snowflake tears while bacon fries in a mosque. 🙂

    2. The VA has been fighting this for a long time. Here is part of the decision from back in April of 2016 when the VA lost their appeal of the original ruling. Even after the ruling the VA continued to spend VA resources on fighting against Veterans even though it was mandated by Congress in 2009 and ordered by a court.

  22. Ben:

Sincere condolences to you and your family. Your decision to share something so personal on a public forum could not have been easy. But you successfully presented a balanced report of yet another VA injustice, and a personal loss. Peace and comfort are first found in the embrace of family.

  23. It is a very sad start to such a gloomy day. I am truly sorry for you loss. My condolences to Caidyn, Ben, Brian Muller, Jace and EmmyLu. My heart goes out to all of you, and you are all in my prayers.

  24. It has been over 50 winters since I last shared the same mouthful of food with my mother. In that time I never rode away from a town without missing those I left behind. I never got used to being alone, and I never learned to say farewell to those I loved without crying.

When I stop being a human then maybe I can learn these things. For now I am just a man and I choose life. No fear. No Shame. I’ll cry if I want to.

    Semper Fi

  25. I know today is a “Day of Mourning!” for Ben and so many more.
I, again, wish my deepest sympathy for y’all.

That said, I believe it’s still important we keep up the fight against VA.

The “ruling” was the quickest ever by a court! Looks like the VA isn’t fulfilling their legal obligation to veterans, who must use outside healthcare on emergency visits to stay alive!
    Great article!

    1. Right-On, Crazy elf!! We never leave a brother or sister behind but at the same time we always watch our sixes and continue the fight. Matter-in-fact, I predict this tragedy Benjamin’s family is going through currently will serve to fuel this fight to make the VA do what is right. Never surrender!

What would be appropriate is to invite every congress critter to one HUGE burn pit bonfire pig roast where dinner is roasted upon a pile of unknown canisters, copious amounts of spent uranium shells, and the grounds are all around burn pit bonfire are weed free thanks to BVA Agent Orange Denier Murphy sprayed and saturated the still wet ground with Agent Orange…now, congress critters, enjoy this wild boar cooked upon this toxic mass and think about all the Vets affected from what you are now consuming. Eat-up now, “can’t have your pudding if you don’t eat your meat”.
Then see if the congress critters and VSO’s continue to turn a blind eye to Veterans and survivors still living this nightmare, since it takes a congress critter to be personally affected or his family or donors, I feel this is the least we could do, invite them for a grand pig roast burn pit bonfire.
      Oink and Fight On!
(Lightening things up, while no disrespect to Ben’s grieving, humor is the best medicine, always)

    2. Crazy Elf, I didn’t see your comment, so I posted the same thing below with some comments on the article.

In my opinion, with this starting in 2009, this started with Obama and his dumbass push to force veterans to pay for their own care, to include service connected injuries. Although the news reporting from that time said he backed off on it because of pushback from VSOs and congress, I don’t believe he backed off at all.

I believe he implemented that jackass plan any way he could…and this is the result.

  26. My condolences, Ben. This was a good start to becoming a single parent. Sorry you no longer have that co helper.

  27. You have my prayers and supportive thoughts in your loss, Benjamin. Utilize this frustration and anger to embolden your/our fight for the VA and DOD to recognize these toxic and deadly practices and to force our gov’t to also take proper care and home assisted care for all affected vets. Whether it’s Agent Orange, radioactive or otherwise toxic waste on military installations exposed to, or blatantly stupid from an environmental view and human toxicity; burn pits. No matter what kind of protocol cordon and entry point is established with such sites, one is entirely at the whims of that uncontrollable element, the weather and topography.
Use this energy you are feeling today Benjamin, to fuel the fight to make things right for those that bore the fight.

  28. Myself, after losing so many around me, countless, I know there is absolutely no trying to prepare for such events in our lives such as this, loss of people in our lives. One decade or two, three or four, we can be surrounded by many many friends, girlfriends, Xs, life-long friends, family, fiance-s, great acquaintances during volunteering/work, etc. Then all gone seemingly swiftly at young ages, for many reasons, and in very short order in one year or over the years. Then by ages for some by ages 50 or 60, we have to sit, age, trudge, and take on the world alone with few to none to really love and trust in our current culture. My lesson out of it all is not to take those left for granted in sour time or in the good. I also know they are all around me in spirit and out of all the sorrows and pain on this Earth.

Words may seem meaningless but you have my deepest condolences, sympathy/empathy, and I can feel your loss too. It’s so very saddening and possibly all uncalled for like many or our issues and pains are. As always I will keep you and the entire family in my thoughts and prayers.

A side note to watch is from another veterans addressing these circumstances from duty, or serving. It is really a very good letter and show for all veterans and those enduring horrible times in life. Google, “John B reads a letter from a disabled Veteran – Then the Veteran does something amazing! ” Published on Feb 23, 2017
Post not going through with Youtube link

We may feel alone much of the time, feeling great loses, alone geographically, but we are not really alone spiritually or in reminding ourselves that others like us are out there too. Sometimes in more serious conditions, and that the fights has to continue, the issues revealed. Please take care of yourselves, we need you.

  29. Ben,
Sorry for your lose of a loved one!!

I wonder ‘what’ will be said at the “post level” of the VFW today. Concerning “Burn Pit Diseases”?
Seems to me, VSO’s know about these “curses”. Yet, never do anything about it! The members want National to become more proactive in forcing VA into admitting, once and for all, the devastating health effects of a multitude of different diseases caused by; burn pits, agent orange and more.
Yet, they stand by and allow veterans to die horrible painful deaths.
I’ve ran out of words to describe my distain against the VA!

So, again, My Condolences to you and yours on a sad day as this!

    1. Crazy Elf, I bet every one of those VSOs give these Burn Pit veterans the same excuse.

“Well, if we push congress to provide care for you, that will take money away from treating X veterans for Y.”

  30. Ben you have mine and our families condolences and support as we are fighting the same war for me as I am know totally home and wheelchair bound most of the time. We know personally what a fight you have with the VA because we found you and your site due to searching for more burn pit suffers like our selfs . We morn and grief with you in this time.
There is so much going on in this that I need to write a bit about the continued struggle for all veterans to get any help if you are critically ill so I wanted to reply to last comment by I think another lawyer who could help us fight because of his work on area 51. Please understand I do not wish to take over your memorial page but I am struggling so badly with pain and bedridden currently and only can write this short reply. I want this info out there before I am completely unable to talk as my disease is a lot like ALS.
We burn pit veterans of all era’s need compassion and care just like Vietnam and agent Orange to any war had to fight for before my Iraq service trigger my severe progressive terminal illness. We have no cures or approved treatments except some experts in these conditions we only have MMJ to stop some of the muscle spasms and severe pain and wasting diseases caused by toxic exposures. No one knows now what will happen to any of us with new administration saying it supports us but then keeps the same management and adds a DOJ that remarks that they are just going to make recreational a priority of law again and those of us in medical states have experienced that before as a excuse for raiding patient’s for their use as well. Just look up the Spokane Five case in Washington in federal court against legitimate patients. One died of his cancer before the case was ever resolved and they forced these patients to suffer in their last days. Medical and rec state didn’t mater to the local Fed’s goal of scaring everyone in medical harmed those most weak and disabled trying to fight for their lives and for a medicine that was used for as long as man has known plants could help with pain and suffering. Veterans have it even worse as they cannot get a MMJ recommendations to meet the legal requirements and almost none can either score or find a qualified civilian doctors to write for it. They then go the recreational rout and once again will be able to be put in jail again for self medicating. Wa state is not supporting our citizens votes about medical and our governor sold patients out this last year to corporate interest. We have personally witnessed this and I encourage veterans to check out what our state is doing to the most vulnerable populations we have. No one is willing to fight for us and we are too ill to do it either. Burn pits, tbi , ptsd, seizures , ao are all helped some by mmj but you get no choice if your a veteran to have anything else and they threaten your care. I am sorry if I was inappropriate in writing this but I am running out of time and I want not one more of us to have to live in such agony because those who are well say who cares it is not me and do not know what we are all fighting. One more burn pit or agent Orange or ptsd or mst or and suffering veteran we need to let everyone know. No politics only patriots needing the promises made to us are kept. Signing off one 100% disabled female veteran and current terminal ill fighting to make all those fighting are heard. Thank you so much Ben for making this a place of hope to fight this and win for all veterans. No more silence from us veteran’s! Don Karg please read as this was for your comment. I apologize now as I am unable to reply back due to my illness.

  31. That was a difficult one to read and am truly sorry for you and your family’s loss. That is very powerful for your daughter Caidyn , to want you to write something because it takes a lot to muster up emotion. That kid has inherited you and Amy’s genuis and I think her legacy has just been born.
I would be interesting if she would be willing to write a letter directly to the Secretary, after giving this grievance period some time.
(hand salute ) to your family.

    1. We aliens know where Area 51 is located. So do almost all in the military, beyond urban legend, especially those of us that served a decade in USAF in Cold War Era.
Many of us were stationed at installations in which immediately after President “early retired” a handful of USAF Bases, one I was in the muck of for 4.5 years, was thrust at the very top of the EPA Super Fund Toxic Clean-up Sites. That was back in the early 90’s and only in last year has that one particular USAF Base started massive military activities again, but only after millions of metric tons of earth was railroaded out to haunt another location and entire weapon storage areas that were purposefully flooded back in 70’s, and other places on base had to have the earth steamed to get the toxic materials to somehow go away from water table. That was only a very large domestic USAF in the USA. One location. Now, take all other bases that used this sloppy and dangerous methods and add all the domestic burn pits and burial sites, and add all those overseas theater locations where toxic burn pits and spent uranium shells were in essence aerated like an aerosol can, when burned and those particulates get into the air and breathed, regardless of upwind cordon entry points…the Veteran unfortunately pays the price while the contractors get paid their price.

Then you have the VA not even wanting to follow the law of presumptives…of anything, then Home Assisted Care being screwed with affected veterans…no veteran is a stranger to this behavior regardless of the era one served, where, or wartime or COTUS right here in USA.

This must change. Just look-up on google what an A-10 Fighter Jet’s artillery rounds consist of and tell me if that’s something you want to even burn the remainders of, then there’s the WMD’s to add in equation…this is madness…and Insane McCain is stirring the pot for more middle east madness…we as Veterans are just like those spent A-10 artillery shells to those warmongers….and we need to be JUST as toxic TO THEM and be up their asses to make things better.
      Rant Out.

  32. 02/24/2017

    Dear Benjamin Krause,

Burn pits have been around for centuries, and the toxic fumes had been a secret to most Military personnel. In New Mexico, the Government was sued over their neglect and wanton actions at Area 51, the road to work was known to the locals as “Widows Highway.”

    https://articles.latimes.com/2013/aug/21/opinion/la-oe-turley-area-51-20130821
“When workers at Area 51 first came to me in the 1990s, they described how the government had placed discarded equipment and hazardous waste in open trenches the length of football fields, then doused them with jet fuel and set them on fire. The highly toxic smoke blowing through the desert base was known as “London fog” by workers. Many came down with classic skin and respiratory illnesses associated with exposure to burning hazardous waste. A chief aim of the lawsuits was to discover exactly what the workers had been exposed to so they could get appropriate medical care.

Apparently, this was the managements’ behavior since the beginning of time, and it has not stopped.

My condolences to the Muller family, will we take action?

    Sincerely,

    Don Karg

  33. I am so sorry for your loss dear family of Amy Marie (Dahl) Muller. Sometimes pictures can speak a thousand words and when i looked at your dear Amy and your mother it truly did. You could see the joy and love thru her face and eyes and the love she has for her precious family and children. She is a light to remember and will always be there for you. She is one of our nations heroes and a true blessing to many people and she will be remembered. A photojournalist who captured history in the making is such a precious gift that she gave to others. I grieve for your loss and i cannot give proper condolences for such a loss, i will pray to God for peace and love for all of you.

  34. She sounds like a truly amazing and incredible woman.

To Caidyn, Ben, Brian Muller, Jace and EmmyLu. Truly sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one who truly must have been a very incredible person.

  35. That one brought tears to my eyes as with the deaths of every brother and sister in arms. She was so young, like most, and she moved on knowing she was loved and still is.
