Thomas Bowman: Does VA Dep Sec Pick Have Any Skeletons In His Closet?
President Donald Trump finally nominated the first Deputy Secretary to serve as #2 behind Secretary David Shulkin.
What we do know is he served in the Marines. He presently serves as the staff director for the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Prior to that, he served inside VA under both Jim Nicholson and James Peake.
It seems obvious that Bowman’s selection is a deviation from past selections, which tended to sprout from the private sector. Instead, Bowman’s deep ties within VA and the Senate may be a signal that Secretary Shulkin intends to move policy quickly through Senate channels, at least more so than previous administrations.
“I applaud President Trump for his wise choice to nominate a veteran of our armed services to this important role,” Isakson said in a statement. “Tom is an extraordinary asset to our team, and his experience in the military and past years at the VA has been invaluable. I know he will bring the same passion for serving our veterans to the VA.”
Anytime Senator Isakson supports a move related to VA, America should at least take a moment to evaluate the option presented. Isakson also attempted to demand retaining former Secretary Robert McDonald before any of the presidential candidates were even selected by their respective parties.
We know he served 30 years in the Marines and is a lawyer. We also know he served in leadership inside two different VA administrations that both were engaged in gutting VA.
What else can we find out? Should we be surprised about Shulkin’s announcements over the past month concerning cutting veterans benefits and whole sail privatization of the agency?

@Seymore Klearly, so this guy was the consulting attorney concerning FOIA requests and in class action lawsuits. Clearly he does not have the transparency to disclose evidence when requested concerning government actions that damage military personnel and others. This is shocking that he was selected. I wonder with his selection that the va expects more lawsuits and more FOIA requests. Great job at researching.

He is NOT a guy who will be able to offer much to help to FIX THE DAMN BROKEN VA:
1. Recognize the problems inherent in the VA are SYSTEM-WIDE, not just limited to a few locations.
2. Fire all the Lazy No Good Workers. Fire EVERY single AFGE/SES Employee.
3. Sell off all the VA facilities. Alternatively, they may be converted into housing for homeless veterans.
4. Issue all veterans a card that allows them to choose their own doctors within their community that they can TRUST.
5. The United States Government will PAY those doctors promptly (Within 45 days) for the care they provide veterans.
6. ELIMINATE the “Federal Protection” Umbrella for incompetent QUACKS that the VA sends to other states to practice other than their own. Going to practice in Hawaii? You need to be LICENSED in Hawaii. Same applies to all other states.
7. Any claim a veteran submits that requires more than 90 days to adjudicate, is automatically found to be in favor of the veteran. If a claim filed by a veteran is found to be a false one designed to scam the system, the VA will have to prove in civil court that a false claim was intentionally submitted.
8. All veterans will be allowed to seek/retain the services of a Veterans Rights Attorney from their first initial contact with the VA.
9. No AFGE, nor any other Labor Union business will be allowed to take place in any Federal Workplace. Conducting Union Business during working hours will be STRICTLY PROHIBITED, and will be STRICTLY ENFORCED. Should any government employee be found violating this provision, it will result in IMMEDIATE LIFETIME DISMISSAL FROM ANY/ALL GOVERNMENTAL EMPLOYMENT.
10. Attorneys for appeal will be retained at the former employee’s PERSONAL expense. U. S. Taxpayer’s will not be subject to payment of legal bills for incompetent personnel with regards to Governmental Employment.
POTUS Reagan broke up PATCO in the ’80’s. Time for POTUS Trump to break up the AFGE. Most of our current Congress Critters do NOT have Veterans Interests at heart. Perhaps their replacements will. VOTE OUT all these WORTHLESS INCUMBENTS.
Give their replacement’s one term to take care of Veterans who put aside their own personal lives to answer this nation’s call when she needed them.

Anyone who thinks what Shulkin said “VA Compensation incentivizes disability” just needs to be fired. We veterans don’t need that type of person in charge of our compensation. It’s like that idiot who was trying to tell vets to forgo compensation in order to start a business. OK so he’s a republican and he should be aware since it was forbes magazine that published the article that says 90% of business start ups fail. Then 1/3 of all other businesses fail within 5 years. So about 95% of all businesses fail. So why exactly should a disabled veteran play that game? Probably because by the time the veteran wants the compensation the VA can deny it easier because of the time that passed.

@Crazy elf, now let me get this straight… privatization is choice? I almost had choice.. the money ran out. Somehow a billion dollars disappeared in less than two months in the choice program, and I don’t know anyone who used it. In Birmingham, St. Vincent’s hospital, 8 blocks from the VA, they advertise choice. They wouldn’t let me use it. I find it so hard to believe that anyone could believe that the VA is here for Veterans. It’s all about THEM.
All I have found so far is; Mr Bowman wants, fewer maternity services, fewer cancer Doctors, and more privatization. More privatization seems to keep coming up. Perhaps that’s their plan. If so, what happened with choice? I put Cox and Bowman together and went to one of Ben’s post. When speaking for the VA, what does privatization mean? Ok, I’m not very bright.

I am so tired of the mantra we need veterans in the VA. Every Sec. except this current one was a veteran or worse a disabled on and nothing changed. On the Claims or Healthcare level its the same a vet becomes a VA employee that is who signs his/her/its check. Lets get competent people, some with integrity and honor and being a Vet does not make that so.
Placing perhaps prior enlisted Veterans instead of former Officers would be a welcomed change. That’s what a lot of Vets would like to see…not an Ex-JAG officer, whom *never* have the person’s interests at the fore and it’s generally the soon-to-Veteran that feels the blunt end of the JAG boot in care of other ringknockers, Inc. Time for a change and place a real leatherneck, ex-drill sergeant in charge of VA….you will see real change, especially if the ex-drill Sgt. has a major bug up his ass from the way VA has been treating his fellow ex-ENLISTED….the Officers, sad to say but true, are as indifferent as the VA.
Change in approach and stature in the ranks is sorely needed. (that of course does not exclude an ex-enlisted Veteran from fraud and abuse…but pretty sure you get my drift)

To fix the VA’s Problems in the Network of What Ever is Distributed, Relocated, or Transferred (we will refer to this as “MONEY”), can be easily segmented, tracked, and then find and perform a way to truly recognize the MONEY. Then once this MONEY is identified, there needs to be a method to count and or measure the MONEY, a basis or formal way to trace fluid movements of the MONEY. Along with the MONEY, whatever needs to be additionally monitored, or tracked through the distributional webbing of the VA, will require ingenuity to find, fix, and then test, to see if any recent changes applied to the movement of MONEY, are properly directed that it creates the normal flow of the MONEY.

The bigger question here is… how does this keep happening? I really do try to have some sympathy for and patience with David Shulkin, the new VA Secretary. He was a holdover from the Obama administration but he’s seemed to fully accept his role as the messenger for the current president’s agenda, not his own. He’s gotten on board with cuts to staffing in Washington where required and more accountability with increased ability to fire misbehaving government workers. But still we seem to keep seeing these problems cropping up over and over again.
Is this specific to the VA for some reason or are we only catching more people because they’re under so much scrutiny? I’d always assumed that all of the departments were doing regular audits where such things would be caught, but is that really the case? So many of these sorts of problems take place at the granular level of human resources management that you can’t really expect Shulkin to be in there checking everyone’s time cards all across the country, but… come on, man. Eventually there has to be some accountability. If the Secretary can’t get this situation under control perhaps it’s time to get somebody in there with a fresh perspective.]”

To best describe Thomas G. Bowman – He is a whitewash Nuclear Option! Get ready for some major negative changes and major coverups coming out of the Department of Veterans Affairs. From his history, he clearly does not give a shit about active Military personnel and I am sure he even cares less about Veterans.
Under the Clinton Administration, in September of 1999, he retired from a 30-year career in the Marine Corp into a position as the Senior Counsel for the Committee on Government Reform. One of his first coverups had to do with the DOD’s involvement with what happened at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco Texas April 19, 1993. When Four ATF Agents and 82 Branch Davidian men, women, and children died.
From his Committee report written December 28th, 2000. Not only was it a Holiday Weekend by at a time when the country was still not sure of who our next president was going to be after the contested election.
From his report, the DOD not only provided air support, 10 special forces operators, hundreds of incendiary 40mm grenades and hundreds of High Explosive 40mm Grenades. The DOD was unable to account for the total number used.

Another of his earliest coverups has to do with the anthrax vaccine. I would point out that retired from the Marine Corp and started working as the Senior Counsel for the Committee on Government Reform in September of 1999. That was the same month that, then, President Clinton signed his Executive Order to no longer require informed consent waivers for enlisted personal being given experimental Vaccines. Clinton had also mandated anthrax vaccine vaccinations for all active duty personnel in 1998.

In skimming the huge congressional report of 2k pages including images and attachments, what exactly did Bowman cover up and where is that referenced in this massive report? I missed it in my skim. I personally know Tom and have seen him several times this year as he is from the Tampa Bay area. He is already getting a bum rap from these comments. Let’s give him a chance instead of trying to find dirt on him. I am aware of none, he is a widower losing his college sweatheart a few years back. He was a Jr combat Marine Officer in Vietnam. He has told me several stories of his tour only because I was also there as USAF pilot and we were sharing war stories and his eyes teared up as he mentioned losing 9 marines serving under him. He also lost his college roommate/best friend who was in the same unit. He is not a career VA guy and should be a friend of the Vets. I am a Thai Vet, the group that is not even recognized by congress to have been exposed to herbicides. He has spent a lot of time with me and getting e mails and info from me about the inequities of the Thai vets and herbicides.
He had plans and 4 tix to the Military inaugeration ball in Jan. (a big deal for anyone in the military past or present) and was looking forward to it Shortly prior to it, he was at one of the military hospitals outside of DC for some medical purpose. He was sitting next to a severely injured young marine who had been there a long time recovering from some very serious combat injuries. Tom struck up a conversation never stating his position, just inquired about the marine and his heatlh. He found out the marine’s wife and parents were flying in to see the inauguration. The kid was very excited that he was getting to go with his family and stand (in his case sit in a wheel chair) in the crowd. Tom had asked the kid his name. Once he finished his medical appointment at the hospital, he went into the administation office and talked to someone in charge. He told them he wanted to give this young marine his 4 tickets, but anonymously and did. They included VIP seats for the inauguration itself as well as to the ball filled with top brass, medal of honor winners, and so forth. Not many “insiders” as he is being called would have done that. He is anyting but a DC Fat Cat as some are already calling him.
He was retired here in the Tampa area when the Vet Affairs chair called and asked him to serve as his chief of staff likely because of him being both a former combat officer and a JAG and also a very smart personable guy. Had he not had been a fairly recent widower, I seriously doubt he would have taken the Senate position, nor this position.
@Scott nelms – – – Hey, may be what many need to know is, “What is Tommy going to do for Veterans by reforming or reorganizing what within the VA? I’m being straight out civil in making is asking this question. And, I don’t know nor have I read anything about Tommy. I’d say, disperse this type of information, and this would present Tommy in expressing to Veterans and their Advocates, what Tommy is specifically going to do. That’s what I’d do.

Nutter, . No one person is going to fix the VA in short order. It is such a huge mess in so many areas, like many of our government programs such Obamacare. Congress is finding out there is no easy fix to Obamacare nor is there any easy fix to the VA.
What would you do to fix the VA’s many problems?
@Sky Pilot: A very good start would be to get rid of the AFGE/SES. Next would be to throw every VAOIG investigator, in prison, for the rest of their natural lives, for covering up the wrongdoings of those, who have cost Veterans their lives, through neglegence, or criminal acts, along with the perpetrators.
Then we can start down the road of lessor crimes, and holding quacks accountable.

@cj- When firing everyone of those VAOIG, replace each one with a VA Whistleblower that’s been fired and completely butthurt about the VA. THAT should get the ball rolling and maybe some heads rolling as well.

Or, how these bastards use manipulation on Veterans, and then there are others that we previously awarded monies, and then the VA stabs them in the back, makes the Veterans repay these monies that were previously rewarded to these Veterans. Hey, they are good people at the VA. I think I’ll ask for a sit down, and try to schematically line out what needs to be done to fix the VA.

@Scott nelms, do you talk to this Thomas Bowman often? You have to realize that this blog has members that have been injured, harassed and denied earned benefits from members of the va. The skeptical attitude is justifiable and deserved because of Benjamin Krause and his team of journalism investigators. They have uncovered injustice many times within the va system. You see we cannot just take an individual at their word because we have been promised much and delivered so little if any in the form of justice.
I would like very much to believe in a new legitimate leadership without corruption and criminal activity. The Department of Veteran Affairs has yet to prove this blog wrong. We do have opinions as everyone else does and others can voice their own opinions as well. They can freely comment on any article as we do. Your friend may have shown kindness to a disabled Veteran and that act alone does not make one above corruption and deception. If you would like to share how this individual intends to improve va services or have him contact this blog directly that maybe of some interest to individuals who have knowledge of corruption or someone who is interested in correcting a corrupt system. Just an idea and an extension of courtesy.
The reason the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) doesn’t care about governmental corruption (judicial, executive, legislative) is because they are also in fact, completely and totally corrupt.

It doesnt even compare to the MEP station you go to to sign up. VA needs to be expunged of the flabbergasted fat fucks that are wasting serious resources that veterans need.

I will always say that Congress and the Pres. should have the SAME Medical care that all the rest of America gets. My Humble Opinion. I have had this idiot as my rep. for too long.
*ANYONE* that has served on Senate veteran Committees, and -2- past VA Administrations has *at least* 22 Veteran Suicides A Day Skeletons in their proverbial closets. All hands are bloody until this swamp is safe to swim in. It’s not currently even close to being safe, so ALL hands are stained with blood from their deceased and turned-away veterans in their closets.
(There’s also a likely chance of actual real skeletons in their closets/showers…of the forensics kind) 🙂

Anytime Senator Isakson supports a move related to VA. I fall of my stair master and think of what he said. he didn’t want any bad publicity, why would he care, doesn’t bringing things out in the open change things and make his job easier…. and whoever he supports makes my antennas go up, and I’m not even a martian.
As for Thomas bowman I don’t know about him neither, if he’s been around those turds before, you start smelling like them, look at McDonald didn’t take him long to get stench-ed up and he was supposed to be a outsider… I have no faith in the system anymore.

I’m all for giving a NEW person a chance at a new job. However, and a BIG H-O-W-E-V-E-R, is the FACT that Thomas Bowman has been part of the VA leadership herd of hacks that have ignored MANY problems while they warmed a deck chair on the V.A. Titanic, including the Phoenix VAMC Waitlist Scandal, and MANY MORE top hits over just last 8 years.
I’m learning quickly that just about anytime Isaacson just LOVES something or someone, it’s usually all about maintaining the shitty status-quo. I hope to be wrong but when lower VA turds are lifted within the bowels of the VA Swamp to become permanent top floaters in the administration, and floaters that have been there through thick corruption, this is more than likely just Shulkin bolting-down the V.A. Titanic’s deck chairs.
That military dot com article states Bowman would likely get rid of many maternity and cancer services at the VA with emphasis on private care.
Again, I may be wrong but it seems Bowman is yet another VA bean counter ring-knocker and Veteran or not, if Isaacson loves the man, it’s enough to be concerned about. What this means essentially is there’s a zero chance Isaacson will be flying-off his morning Stairmaster with bad news with Bowman at the Bow of the V.A. Titanic. 🙂

Tell the va to stop denying care to these veterans and giving them a cocktail of medication that screws them up.
