Vocational Rehabilitation to Host Workshops

Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment will hold workshops during the Detroit Vets Hiring Fair next week. The economic impact on the city is projected to be $11 million.

According to Under Secretary Allison Hickey, “At VA, we know the skills and characteristics Veterans bring with them to a new career can only benefit an organization.” She went on, “Our [Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment] program is committed to assisting Veterans find meaningful careers, whether in the federal government or in the private sector.”

From June 26 to June 29, the Department of Veterans Affairs is sponsoring two events in Detroit.

The first is the National Veterans Owned Small Business Expo. At  the Small Business Expo, decision makers from Veteran Affairs will meet with veteran-owned small businesses to discussion how these businesses can access the government contracting arena. The event will also have numerous workshops to help these same businesses operate more effectively.

Second, the VA simultaneously scheduled a job fair at the same building with hopes to combine job seekers with veteran-owned businesses. This could prove to be a brilliant combination, depending on how VA manages the interaction between the two events.

At the hiring event Vocational Rehabilitation plans to have workshops. I will make a point to be there for these and to see the changes Director Ruth Fanning has been implementing over the past year. Director Fanning is head of Vocational Rehabilitation.

In Michigan, there are over 700,000 veterans. Hopefully some of those same veterans who are seeking employment will show up.
