TIME Lists VA Doctor In World’s Top 100 Most Influential People
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced one of its brain doctors is listed by TIME as among the top 100 most influential people in the world.
Chief of neuropathology Dr. Ann McKee was named for her work on concussion, sub-concussion and blast injury for military veterans and athletes. This includes her work in Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease that alters function.
At Boston VA Medical Center, Dr. McKee also runs the brain banks for Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center (BUADC), Framingham Heart Study and Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium, which are all based at VA Boston.

WASHINGTON — TIME magazine has named Dr. Ann McKee, chief of neuropathology of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Boston Healthcare System, to the 2018 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, announced April 19.
This recognition comes from McKee’s research into the long-term effects of concussion, sub-concussion and blast injury in contact sports with athletes and military Veterans, including Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), an ongoing disease of the brain that alters function.
“This acknowledgment from Time affirms the impact of Dr. McKee’s years of research for the VA,” said VA Acting Secretary Robert Wilkie. “Her work shifted the prevailing thought regarding head trauma, demonstrating that ‘mild’ particularly repetitive head trauma is not just an acute injury. It can provoke a persistent and progressive neurodegeneration CTE that continues long after the traumatic exposure.”
A board-certified neurologist and neuropathologist, and recipient of a host of awards for her research, McKee has published over 70 percent of the world’s cases of CTE ever reported.
“Research on CTE began with a VA patient, and from that first case of CTE, morphed into a tremendous research effort involving many other organizations,” McKee said. “It has taken medical researchers and scientists working with business to detect where it first starts — on the battlefield and sports field.”
McKee is credited for creating the VA – Boston University – Concussion Legacy Foundation (VA-BU-CLF) brain bank. The organization is the world’s largest repository of brains from individuals exposed to traumatic brain injuries (over 550) and neuropathologically confirmed CTE (over 320).
McKee did her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin and received her medical degree from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in neurology at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and in neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
In addition to her role as Boston VA’s chief of neuropathology, McKee directs the brain banks for the BUADC, Framingham Heart Study and Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium, which are all based at VA Boston.
She concurrently holds the titles of professor of neurology and pathology at Boston University School of Medicine; director of the Neuropathology Core and associate director for the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center (BUADC); and director of the BU CTE Center.

The majority of those who are claiming to be retiring are currently under investigation for ethics violations by the house ethics panel. With the leaks in congress about the MeToos that have been caught up in the renewed ethics violations for paying off sexual offenses and harassment claims via taxpayers money you can see what is happening.
Several prime examples of Congressman who were likely being blackmailed before the leaks, but after the leaks they were forced to resign instead of collecting the benefits of retiring from Congress.

Also there are certainly more resignations from this so-called retiring Congressman that are coming before the next election this fall. While the Democrats have a list of soon to resign Congressman also. The Dems are not announcing the promises to retire to end the house ethics committee’s investigations against them. In my opinion, to answer your question, you would receive a correct diagnosis from Mayo. Because they would make sure proper and appropriate testing was performed to make that conclusion VHA would have to pay for that genuine healthcare. If this extends and improves your life circumstances, well guess how that gets paid as well. The VA does not want veterans to easily have their share of the promise.

Because the Mayo Clinic has many contracts with the VA at numerous VAMCs. Such as the one in Minneapolis where they use the VAMCs as training grounds for Doctors and use the Veterans for numerous research studies. In fact the Mayo Clinic is contracted to provide hundreds of doctors to the different VAMCs.
As a result the Mayo Clinic only accepts Veterans under other payment programs where they are paid more for each Veteran seen. Also, it eliminates the middleman administrators of the choice program and insures that the Mayo Clinic will receive timely payment without Health Net or TriWest getting their sticky hands on the VA payment and taking a cut of the money as middlemen for the the Choice Program.
Also, if you check, you will find that most heads of the different clinic at the VAMCs, which are controlled by the Mayo Clinic. The Department heads also work at the Mayo Clinic in a teaching position drawing salaries from both the Mayo Clinic and the VAMC.

Your post above is the first I have seen from you, which gives me no gauge on how many previous of Ben’s entries you have read. Let me state that in a perfect VHA world, your post makes absolute perfect common sense; therein lies THE issue.
As has been revealed by many on this board throughout the many years, common sense is one of many details the VHA insists it can operate without. “T” is correct, in that until you have run and exhausted the gammut within at least one of the VA medical facilities you can not possibly understand what an veteran has to go through in their individual circumstance. Compound that with the modus operandi being insular within each facility and no answers allowed to any veteran’s querries (all union ya know!).
I do hope you will avail yourself of the previous articles and postings, and if I may be so bold, please shine an illumintion where you can, to help us get this mess closer to normalcy.

Yes you can. It’s simple. Call the doctor you want to see pay out of pocket unless you have Tricare or Champ VA or other insurance then submit it back to the VA for reimbursement. You’re not stuck @ VA & you’re not stuck @ the one you currently go to. If you don’t like it, call the VA system you prefer & make appointments there. You can even go to the Boston VA if you wanted. You just have to call them.

This is wonderful news for Dr. McKee and everyone connected with that team in VA healthcare and civilian brain trauma care. That said, the downside to this, and yes I perceive one, is that Joe & Jane Citizen patently take this to assume, “See, all is well with veteran healthcare…”!
The veteran community knows full well the tens of thousands of its brain injured that will never get within sniffing distance of Dr. McKee’s teammembers or ever truly benifit from their collective research. 3.) Good for Dr. McKee with kudos. However like Nam mentioned she, others, of her caliber are not for us. Maybe for McCain, college sports jocks, “NFL”, celebrities, etc. Far beyond our reach. In past attempts to see those with her credentials just in my state alone was impossible and for the elite, wealthy, other professionals, MDs, and sports celebrities only. Insurance sure wouldn’t allow for it or pay to see such people. Has it changed? I don’t know. Been years back and too late in the game and too broke to play that game today. Awesome M.D. and researcher…but why no talk about the VA failing to send all those unqualified TBI examination Veterans to the likes of Dr. McKee? Am I missing something or is that the point; the VA touts world class healthcare while having this brilliant MD/Researcher, while sending the very Veterans affected by TBI to unqualified hacks that could never hold a candle to Dr. McKee.
Maybe I’m just bitter but anytime the VA or it’s Big Pig Minions are in light of accountability and scrutiny, they ALWAYS manage to polish their very best turds for world class health presentation…usually in advance of a money-grab, for emphasis.
Again, WHY were ALL those wrongly diagnosed, shortchanged, hung-out-to-die, TBI Veterans sent to Dr. McKee’s office? We Vets are USED to standing in-line…do crows fly in Dr. McKee’s direction or is that not even in the Choice of things?
Again, forgive my bitterness but the VA polishes turds like genie bottles, and with same results…

You are NOT bitter at all! Rather you are standing tall in your truth!
No offense intended, but once they reach Dr. McKee’s Table, they are dead. I don’t believe there is anything preventing people from pledging to donate their brains to the VA BU Brain Bank. I think Chris Nowitzskii of WWE fame, is running a concussion legacy foundation which is trying to get more brains donated to Dr. McKee’s studies. Dissecting brains requires corpses. Better would be to improve quality of life measures while people are still living.
Marty Salo: Are you saying this Dr, has no contact with “living Veterans”?, and that her studies are only contained to those who are deceased? She studies only the actual “brain” , by dissecting, imaging, chemical reactions, etc?
So do you support the Veterans Affairs policies of Delay, Deny, until they die and then they will pick their brains?
